It is a big honour for me to receive the Krenkel Medal. In Leipzig I could get to know 1961 E.T.Krenkel personally. Also I am proud of many QSOs with him. The yearly taking place RAEM contest is a special challenge which I like to accept with pleasure.
My year of birth is in 1938. At the age of 16 years I learnt Morse code and got in 1958 the first amateur radio licence. During more than 60 years of my amateur radio activity I have experienced the technical and radio traffic development. Thus I always felt obliged to the technical progress and the radio operation in the spirit of the understanding among nations. The mutual esteem is especially important to me.

About 50 years I am entrusted with duties in amateur radio organisations: teacher in Morse code, head of division in the Radioclub of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), contest and award manager in the district Rostock, vice president of the Radio Sport Association (RSV) of the GDR, chairperson of the district Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, member of the board of directors of the German Amateur-Radio-Club (DARC) and now deputy of the district chairperson. The core of this many-sided engagement was and is the mediation of impulses to the active amateur radio activity. Besides, the acknowledgment of achievement at all levels is especially important.
I could reach the most important success with the creation of the legal basis for the radio amateurs of the GDR with the union with the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). All rights were preserved and the members of the club stations got individual licences.
The board of directors of the RSV of the GDR had organised the structures for the complete insertion in the DARC.
With much political talent the German unity was for the radio amateurs of the GDR as legal well as organizationally had been formed with dignity.
At the age of 80 years I am glad to be able to work still actively for the promotion of the radio activities. The administration of web pages, the management of special stations of the district Mecklenburg-Vorpommern counts to these activities as well as the work as a site manager of the World Radio Team Championship (WRTC) 2018 in Germany.
Telegraphy is with 96% of all QSOs my preferential mode. With 60 German and 30 call signs from 18 countries I have effected about 275 thousand QSOs - of it 45 thousand of the island Madeira.
Contests are now my main radio activity. Besides, is important: the challenge accept and in the pile up to exist and not switch off. With a simple radio equipment I reach the first third in result lists. And, besides, only the half contest time is available to me because I share contests with my wife Rosel, DL3KWR. Thus we both have pleasure in the contest.
Every year we are in the time of the Russian DX Contest on the island Madeira and offer with pleasure the multiplier CT9; the contester expect us. With an easy radio equipment we are present and give to other radio friends an example of radio operation.
The modern electronic possibilities allow recognition for everybody. With the certificate acquisition the protection of traditions is also important. The pennon "Sea Of Peace" has got over all questionings and was in 2018, 60 years old. Proudly I am also on a certificate which the district Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has published on the occasion of "65 years after the licencing of the amateur radio in the GDR". Settled with HAMLOGS.NET (R4AS and RQ4A) everything ran perfectly through the internet: no special application form, no QSLs, no manager, no costs - this is modern amateur radio!
The oldest tradition on the amateur radio is the QSL exchange. These cards are also a kind of personal cards and have with it a special ideal value. But, all wishes could never be fulfilled. As member of the board I help the EQSL users worldwide. 60 years ago nobody would have risquély to dream of such possibilities.
Radio amateurs devote themselves more than 100 years to the technical progress. They are pioneers and ambassadors. Now and then widespread reservations hinder the unlimited use of modern procedures. Here we have a big sphere of activity to be able to work for the spirit of E.T.Krenkel.
