Biography of N1MX

Michael Edward Amaral was first licensed in 1967 at the age of with the callsign WN1IDP, later changing to WA1IDP in 1968. As a young teenager, Michael was contacting stations in Europe and the former Soviet Bloc Countries via radiotelegraph, always expressing a message of friendship & peace from the United States of America.

In 1986, 1987 & 1988, Michael operated as WA1IDP/CU2, from the Island of Sao Miguel, Azores (Portugal), working and confirming radiotelegraph contacts with many thousands of radio amateurs around the world, always including that same message of peace between nations.

After upgrading his license several times, he eventually changed his callsign to the U.S. Amateur Extra Class Callsign "N1MX".

Over the past 20-plus years, Michael has consistently advocated for good communications practices amongst amateurs and always included a message of Peace and Friendship, considering it a great privilege to freely communicate with amateur stations in the global radio amateur community.

He is a member of the prestigious A1-Operators Club of the American Radio Relay League, a life-member of the ARRL, and is an ardent supporter of W1AW, the flagship station of the ARRL.

Now retired after 37years working as a Mechanical Designer/Design Engineer within the metro-Boston Research & Development Community, he continues his messages of friendship and peace between all nations via his amateur radio activities. He operates from his home town of Walpole, Massachusetts.

I can briefly tell you that since 1991 I am hams I have more than 1.5 million QSOs in all bands and modes, I have held more than 300 awards and have participated in many contests, obtaining first place in the world on several occasions in the WW Contest.

I have more than 100 countries confirmed in the 9 bands and I work satellite with 175 confirmed grid locators, I also work a lot the 6m band with more than 550 confirmed grids.

I think that is the most important thing that I can comment on to you.

Chip Margelli, K7JA, has been licensed since 1963, and an Extra Class licensee since 1968. Chip and his wife Janet, KL7MF live in Garden Grove, California. Chip is a Life Member of ARRL, AMSAT, and Quarter Century Wireless Association, and he works for Ham Radio Outlet as an I.T. Specialist.

For over fifty years, Chip has been active in DXing and, especially, international radiosport competition and goodwill activities. Among his accomplishments are twelve First-Place finishes nationally in the ARRL November Sweepstakes, and a number of world-high or national wins in the CQ World-Wide DX Contest, ARRL DX Contest, and CQ WPX Contest. Chip's DXpedition activities include operations from St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Saipan, Micronesia, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Martinique, Cuba, and Barbados.

In 1984, Chip and Janet were invited by the Chinese Radio Sport Association to travel to Beijing for operation from BY1PK and help train the new Chinese operators during the early phases of the rebirth of Amateur Radio in China.

In 1989, Chip was honored by being selected to be the American representative in the first-ever Finnish-Soviet-American DXpedition to Malyj-Vysotskij Island as 4J1FS. The following year, Chip and his teammate Mike Wetzel, W9RE, won a Silver Medal at the World Radiosport Team Championship, held in conjunction with the Goodwill Games in Seattle.

And in the Fall of 1991, Chip was a member of the Instructor/Operator team in the IARU Albania Project (ZA1A), led by Martti Laine, OH2BH, which brought about the rebirth of Amateur Radio in Albania after many decades of radio silence.

In May of 2005, Chip and partner Ken Miller, K6CTW, made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC, utilizing “ancient” Morse Code to compete with (and defeat) the U.S. champion cell-phone text messenger in a message-completion speed contest. Chip is a 2018 inductee into the First Class CW Operators’ Club (FOC).

Articles by Chip have been published in QST, CQ VHF, Popular Communications, CQ, and FOCUS magazines, and in several books. Outside of Amateur Radio, Chip enjoys photography, astronomy, and is a marathon runner.

In May of 2008, Chip was inducted into CQ Magazine’s Amateur Radio Hall of Fame.

Born in 1954 in Buffalo, New York, I became interested in radio electronics by three uncles in my family who were amateur radio operators. I built my first transmitter in school in the 6th grade at age 12 and had so much fun that I went on to get my beginners radio novice license in 1967 working only CW with crystal controlled transmitters back then.

I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and obtained a degree in electrical engineering in 1972. After graduation I worked at Harris Corporation, RF Communications Division in Rochester, New York for nearly 40 years designing and building government and military radios. During those years I had the privilege to meet many soldiers and radios operators while helping to integrate and test radio installations.

I am married to my beautiful wife, Barbara N2PGX, and we have raised two children together, along with five grandchildren now. I continue to follow my radio interests today, using the many new equipments and modes now available to us. My passion is still for CW today, and I can be found on the HF bands daily. I hope you will give me a call if you hear W2KA on the airwaves, and let me have the privilege of a having a radio contact with you.

I was born as a third generation radio amateur from both sides of the family, amateur radio is in my DNA. By the time I obtained my license in 1977, I already knew how to measure, cut and build dipoles, how to solder, how to use a multitester and how to properly load and use tube operated equipment. My United States license is more recent, from 2014, when I took and passed the exams for Novice and General license in one single day.

I enjoy working DX but also enjoy a good rag chew with ham friends. I have been able to get DXCC and WAS. I operate locally in VHF/UHF and in recent years I've been busy working the satellites FM satellites and already qualify for VUCC. I've built several antennas for satellite work and others for local operation. In recent years, I was able to cooperate with the HU1DL dxpedition, which logged thousands of contacts in all bands and also cooperated with the HU4U dxpedition in 1999. I have participated in the launching of several high-altitude balloons in the part that relates to amateur radio and APRS. My last contest operation was operating YS1YS in the CQWW DX SSB in October 2020.

Another side of the hobby that I also enjoy is restoring and using old equipment, of which I have several units in operation after many years.

I've been active in emergency communications when required, even before I became a ham, believing that emergency work is an area where amateur radio can be of service to communities, especially when other communication sources stop working due to natural disasters or unforeseen events.

Since 2010, I have been a member of the Board of Directors of IARU Region 2, currently its Vicepresident and Area D Director. In that position, I've traveled to regional telecom meetings to represent and defend the interests of all radio amateurs. This also involved participating in the design and implementation of the Winlink emergency communications system that was installed in all Central American countries thanks to the sponsoring of the ITU as a pilot phase, intended to extend to all the Americas to provide emergency communications.

My plan is to continue operating, experimenting and discovering what else amateur radio has to offer, which is indeed a lot, and to continue promoting and supporting the work of radio amateurs in emergency situations in any way I can. A dream I have…to work EME.

Для меня большая честь быть номинантом медали имени Э.Т. Кренкеля с которым я был лично знаком!

Я просто скажу Вам правду: Очень часто в моих воспоминаниях, отрезках моей жизни, в памяти моей пробегают воспоминания о моей жизни и моих встречах, в моей жизни-интересных встреч было предостаточно и вот одна из них!

В 30 годах-когда наши герои «папанинцы» вернулись на Родную землю и во многих городах люди с энтузиазмом встречали своих героев с восторгом, прославляя их труднейший дрейф на полярной льдине. Мне тогда было 4 года, и я был среди встречающих! И.Д. Папанин поднял меня на руках и сказал всем: «Вот будущие открыватели и будущие путешественники». Это было на Украине в г. Дебальцево. Наверное, с этого все и началось!

Так же неожиданно у меня произошла незабываемая встреча с Эрнстом Теодоровичем Кренкелем! Мы внесли предложение в ЦК ВЛКСМ и ЦК ДОСААФ провести на базе Всесоюзного пионерского лагеря «АРТЕК» – «Первые детские радиоигры среди пионеров и школьников СССР». Это была очень интересная и серьёзная задумка, которая успешно в последствии осуществилась. Меня как организатора вызвали в Центральный Радиоклуб СССР на историческое место г. Москвы, Сретенка, д. 1. Никогда не забуду эти встречи! Я подробно доложил о планах проведения. Все единогласно одобрили и поддержали идею. Э.Т. Кренкель, будучи председателем Федерации Радиоспорта СССР, подробно поинтересовался моими техническими возможностями и остался доволен, после чего дал мне в помощь Крымский областной радиоклуб ДОСААФ. Я настойчиво приглашал его проехать на открытие этих знаменательных соревнований, но к сожалению, он был очень занят в тот период. Через неделю мы с ним провели интересную радиосвязь в эфире. Затем была еще одна короткая деловая встреча и в один из дней мы потеряли своего любимого радиста! Он ушел от нас!

По жизни у меня было много интересных встреч с замечательными людьми и много путешествий! Сейчас мне 84, но моя радиолюбительская душа тащит меня куда-то! Спасибо, что не забываете меня. И я Вам низко кланяюсь за это!

Ellen White learned Morse Code while in high school, during WW-II. In 1946 she was first licensed and has since been active on CW as W2RBU W6YYM KH6QI W1YYM and W1YL. For 25 years Ellen was on the staff of the American Radio Relay League. Her activity over the years has included DXCC WAZ. She was instrumental in establishing two active contest clubs, Murphy’s Marauders (which evolved into the Yankee Clipper Contest Club) and the Florida Contest Club. Her OM was W1CW of DXCC management fame (now SK) and son K4OJ, Florida Contest Club president (now SK). Ellen spent many years recording QST on tape for sightless hams, through the US Library of Congress talking book program. For several years she has been using the W7RN remote in Nevada to stay active on 40 meter CW as W1YL/7, usually on 40 meter CW around 1000Z.

Richard Zwirko, first licensed as KN1HTV in 1958, has been continuously active in Amateur Radio using the callsign K1HTV for over 6 decades. He had a 48 year career in commercial and U.S government radio broadcasting. After 28 years of service at the Voice of America in Washington, DC, he retired in 2008 as senior Technical Support manager.

Rich, as a serious DXer, has worked DXCC on all 11 Amateur Radio bands between 160 and 6 Meters. He has 200 countries confirmed on 9 bands and over 300 countries confirmed on all 7 bands from 40 through 10 Meters. Rich is on the DXCC Honor Roll, only missing North Korea to achieve Honor Roll #1. All HF DXing has been done while running 100 Watts or less. He is an avid island chaser, working more than 1040 IOTAs.

His early interest in Sputnik and the first OSCAR satellites lead Rich to become Vice President of Operations and a member of the board of directors of AMSAT, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation. He served between 1974 and 1984 during the launch of OSCARs 7 through 11 satellites.

Rich was heavily involved in the early days of Packet Radio, digi-peaters and packet bulletin boards in the Washington, DC area. He was instrumental in the establishment of the first NETROM node on the East Coast of the United States. He served as system operator for numerous NETROM packet radio nodes in the Washington, DC and Maryland area. Having high interest in VHF propagation, meteor scatter and VHf DXing, Rich became heavily involved in the use of WSJT software since its first release in 2001. In 2017, when the new FT8 mode was created, he started DXing using that mode, working over 240 DXCC countries with 75 Watts or less.

In 2018, with the explosion of popularity of this new FT8 digital mode, Rich was approached by some of his visually impaired Ham friends asking if there could be a way that would allow them to start using the FT8 mode. A number of requests were made to the WSJT-X Development Group reflector looking for a software developer who would work with Rich to produce such a program. The resulting software in conjunction with WSJT-X, gives blind Hams a way to easily make FT8 contacts. Recruiting a number of visually impaired Hams, Rich worked with them as beta testers of the software. The program called Quick Log, QLog for short, was developed by W2JDB, and is now in the early stages of being released. Because of these efforts, blind Radio Amateurs will be able to make worldwide contacts using the new FT8 and FT4 digital modes.

My Amateur Radio Adventure

As a young 10year boy in 1957, having a Short Wave Radio had always intrigued me. I would order the Allied Radio Catalog and would drool over the Band Scanner SWL Radio Kit that they advertised. The price of $25.00 was a fortune to me at that time, so I just dreamed that one day I would own a Short Wave Radio and discover the mysteries of short wave radio.

Being a typical kid in that era, I would often find the treasures that my urban neighbors would discard in front of the apartment buildings where I lived. In 1961, one such find was an old RCA Broadcast Band and Short Wave Receiver.

Upon dragging this dirty box back to our small apartment, I immediately plugged it into the AC socket and found that most of the tubes would light. It also had a strange green eye in the center of the radio! My mother would often repair our old Black and White TV by changing tubes, so I figured that if I replaced those tubes that didn’t light, maybe I could get this radio to work.

Living in the city provided us with a wealth of stores, one of which was the local TV Repair Shop where I secured the tubes I needed. Upon returning with the tubes I needed, and replacing the bad tubes, I was surprised when the radio came to life and the room was filled with static. Upon connecting a random piece of wire to the antenna lugs, I began hearing our old favorites “Oldies” stations on the AM Broadcast band. Later that evening as I moved the dial across the 7 Mhz band, the Green Eye closed I stumbled onto a station signing W3IOU who was talking with someone who I couldn’t hear. Could this be the ham radio stations that I had hear about who were on the short wave bands?

At school the next day, I looked for a younger kid whose house had a large antenna on the roof and I told him what I had discovered. His reply was ‘sure that’s ham radio and my mother and father are both hams. He invited me to his apartment a few blocks from where I lived and introduced me to his mother K2UXW Trudy Forbes (SK) and his father K2QMS Roy Forbes (SK) who would later become my Elmer’s.

On one side of their kitchen, in their small apartment, was a desk filled with all sorts of radios, dials and switches. Trudy and Roy explained to me what ham radio was all about and I was hooked. They encouraged me to study for my Novice License and gave me the study materials from that era, all from the ARRL. From that day forward, I was always asking Roy and Trudy questions and stopping by their QTH as I continued my studies.

In late June of 1962, I took the 5 WPM Code Test and the written exam at the Forbes QTH. Every day during the months of and in August of that year, I would race home from school to our mailbox to see if I got a letter from the FCC. Finally, that day arrived, and as I ripped open the envelope, WN2CZB was listed above my name and I had my Novice Ticket. At that time Novices were allowed 2 Meter AM privileges and Roy K2QMS lent me a Gonset 2 Meter AM Transceiver to make my first QSO’s.

I had saved enough money to buy a Heathkit Twoer (2 Meter AM Regenerative Transceiver) and had made a QSO to a station in Conn with a Ground plane Antenna. I had worked my first DX station and I was hooked on DX’ing from that day forward.

My Novice year passed in a flash and although I was able to save enough money for an HQ-110A, I never got enough money for a transmitter so I didn’t get the chance to operate on the Novice bands on CW.

After I passed my Technician Test, I was sure that I would be issued the call sign W2CZB since that call had not been issued. I was very surprised when my license arrived and I was issued the call sign WB2CZB. To all the old timers at time, my call sign labeled me as one of the new kids on the block.

I continued to operate on 2 meters until 1965 when I purchased a Ameco TX62 which gave me the 6 Meter Band. I erected a small 3 element Yagi on the roof of the apartment building where I lived and discovered the Magic Band. I was working out to the mid west on Sporadic E and even heard the Bahamas on CW! I was hooked on 6 meters, which is still my favorite band.

In the following years, I upgraded to General, began my carreer in the Police Department, the US Army Reserve and got married, so my operating time was limited. It was after our first son Scott was born and we moved to our own home in Hillsdale, NJ, that I began to actively chase DX on the HF bands.

Knowing that I wasn’t going to achieve a high country total with a General Ticket I began to study for my Advanced and finally my Extra Class license. At this time period, the exams were given at the FCC Office at Varrick Street New York City. I thought that the Advanced Class theory was more difficult than the Extra Class theory at the time. I’ll never forget the old school desks where you were required to copy by hand one full minute of copy at 20 WPM. I was concerned that the elderly looking examiner would be able to read my poor handwriting. But he did and I passed and walked out with my Extra Class License.

I was now able to get to operate in those first 25 Khz where all that DX was hiding from me. It was at my small lot in Hillsdale, NJ (50 feet by 104 feet) where I achieved 50 Mhz DXCC #48, 50 Mhz WAS # 676, 50 Mhz WAC, 50 Mhz WAZ # 9, and 155 countries confirmed on 50 Mhz , using a 5-element yagi at 55 feet and a KW.

I also achieved Honor Roll Status on HF using a 3 element tri-band yagi and wire antennas, along with 160 Meter DXCC # 131 with an Inverted L with radials running all around my small suburban lot.

My main operating interest is the 6 Meter Band I in 1988 I started to operate in wanted countries with my friend K4JM Holt. Our first expedition was to Saba Island from July 2 to July 12, 1988 as PJ0M. We studied sporadic E propagation to Europe and were able to contact stations in The United Kingdom and the USA. Our second expedition was to Barbados as 8P9JM from July 1 to July 8, 2000. The third was to St. Maarteen as PJ7M from July 2 to July 12, 2004. Finally our third expedition was to the Cayman Islands as ZF2ZD where I completed the first 6 Meter Earth-Moon-Earth Contact with W7GJ in Montana. This expedition was contacted on June 28th and July 6, 2008.

Our studies during these Four Expeditions proved that there was a Sporadic E Path between the Caribbean Islands and Europe and Africa. I now continue my studies from my home Amateur Radio Station as K2ZD in Jeffersonville, New York and specialize in Earth-Moon-Earth Communications on the 6 Meter Band. My present score is 207 Confirmed Countries on the 6 Meter Band.

Alan, W2MV received his first call sign WA2SLX in 1971. In 1977, he received W2MV and still has that call. His ham radio interests are mostly HF DXing, especially on CW. He is an electrical engineer with a specialty in RF systems, but also worked in the computer field for many years. Currently, he is an RF systems senior consultant. Alan's XYL is also a ham, KA2VUC. He has two grown children, both engineers. Alan's other interests are flying (he is a pilot), travelling, and languages. He studies Spanish, Russian and German.

First licensed at age thirteen in 1958 as KN3EPQ. Also held calls WA2EBR in 1959, then WA4JFY in 1962. I have always done CW exclusively. As a teen I handled a great deal of traffic. I was awarded Official Relay Station, both Section Net Certificate and Regional Net Certificate, and have been awarded the famous Brass Pounder League Award for traffic handling. I was also involved in contesting, and was inducted into the famous Potomac Valley Radio Club. I became the 20 meter operator for then super station, W4KXV where I set the record for most countries worked on one band (132) in the ARRL DX contest.

I moved to New Mexico in 1969 where my call was WA5YTX. I won New Mexico section awards in both the ARRL Sweepstakes and the ARRL DX Contest on numerous occasions, partial list below, including top ten finish.

In 1980 I hosted one of the first five exchange teachers from the USSR for a semester. In 1991 I arranged for his return for a semester. In 1992 (and again in 1993), my family and I traveled to Ukraine and Russia. I taught English at University of Zaparoshye. Vlad Lateshenko arranged for me to have the first Ukrainian call sign assigned to an American, US0Q, which we used together in the WPX contest that year. I also visited in Nikopol where I operated as UR5E.

In June of 1992 I traveled to Russia, first to St. Petersburg. Victor Stragonov arranged for me to operate the club station, UZ1AWT as UA1A. the same station that had been used by the Harvard Amateur radio club previously as US1A, possibly the first individual American to operate from Russia. In 1996, following the WRTC in San Francisco, four members of the St. Petersburg Club came to my home to operate to complete the remarkable exchange.

In April of 1994 I became FOC, First Class Operator Club, member number 1,636. I was awarded the A-1 Operator Club 8 October 1996. In 1998 I became a member of the Old Old Timers Club, # 3,757.

In 2000 I began 19 years of organizing an entry in the US Field Day competition. I operated as W5YA, initially in the two-man team competition. The first year, we placed third overall.

In 2001 and 2003, we took first place in the category. In 2002 and 2004 we were second. In 2003, 2004, and 2005, we were second. We finished first in 2006, 2007, and 2008. We moved up to the 1A category, and won in 2009, 2010. Then we moved up to the 3A (three transmitter) category. We won every year from 2011 to 2018, in 2012 we set the all time record for the category. See the QRZ dot com website under club call, W5YA for more detail.

In the ARRL 160 meter contest in year 2000, and using the call sign W5YA, I worked all states in one night, QRP..

On February 12, 2007, I completed the first (and still only known) WAC (Worked All Continents) on 160 meters using QRP power level. See the ARRL Low Power Communication, by Rich Arland, 2007 edition, page 5-11.

In late summer of 2010 New Mexico established a Summits On the Air association, and I made my first mountain peak activation. By 2012 I had devised an activation set-up that weighed only about one kilogram and started seriously activating peaks. Mountain peaks in this area are mostly 3,000 meters and higher, most have no trails.

On 14 September, 2012 I became the first operator in the western hemisphere to achieve Mountain Goat status with over 100 mountain peak activations. Some peaks as high as 4,000 meters.

I pioneered ultra-light SOTA activation equipment. I was the first in north America to use an end fed halfwave wire, first to use #28 wire, first to use linked lengths to achieve multi-band, the first to experiment with tiny traps for multi-band. This approach has been copied by several commercial vendors, but none produce a version like my trap which weighs only 2.5 grams.

By 2015 my SOTA activation set-up weighs under one-half kilogram. My backpack is made of gauze, and it weighs only 100 grams. My 5 meter pole weighs only 175 grams.

Now I am approaching 700 SOTA peak activations. I have made about 15,000 QRP contacts from SOTA peaks. My best QRP DX from a SOTA peak, and using my end fed halfwave wire supported by a fishing pole was UR5FA/MM on 20 November, 2012. Oleg was also operating QRP. He was in grid square LG-42 at a distance of 10,859 miles!

Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO, was first licensed in 1970. He has been active in public service, amateur radio public relations, and radio club leadership. He is active on HF and VHF.

Josuweit served as the Public Service Columnist for CQ Amateur Radio from 2000 - 2009. Prior to that he wrote the public service column for CQ VHF. He has reported on amateur radio assistance during major disasters in North America, Europe, and China. He has had articles appear in Popular Communications, Conformity, 9-1-1, QST, as well as amateur radio magazines in other countries. He served on the ARRL Public Relations Committee for over 10 years. In 1996 he was awarded the ARRL McGan Silver Antenna Award for outstanding public relations while a ham from the Ukraine was brought to the United States for medical care. Bob was a member of ARRL's retired Public Service Advisory Committee and past chairman of the Emergency Communications Advisory Committee. He is a former ARRL Eastern Pennsylvania Section Emergency Coordinator, ARRL Public Information Officer and Assistant Section Manager in Eastern Pennsylvania.

1n 1980 he was awarded an Olympic Appreciation Medal (the same as a bronze medal, except that it wasn’t won in competition) for providing communications for the 1980 Winter Olympic Torch Relay from Olympia, Greece to Lake Placid, NY.

For the past ten years Bob has held various leadership positions, including president, in the Holmesburg Amateur Radio Club in Philadelphia, PA. As trustee for the club call, WM3PEN, he has lead the club effort as a bonus station during the 13 Colonies Special Event for over 10 years. He is a founding member of the Mid-Atlantic Amateur Radio Club and a member of the Philadelphia Digital Radio Association.

1950 with the call W4QCW. In 1954 I was on the first Navassa Island DXpedition as KC4AB. That same year I earned my first DXCC. In 1967 I guest operated at EA9EJ in Rio de Oro and in 1969 I was a member of the K4IA/KC4 Navassa Dxpediton.

Later that year I received the 5BDXCC#1 award.

In 1977 I became W4DR.

My wife of 60 years is N4CFL and a surviving son is KK4HJ.

In 2001 I was a member of the YK9A DXpedition to Syria. This same year I was awarded the first, and as of 2007, only Clinton B DeSoto Cup for the most documented Band/Entities (DXCC countries) on 160 through 6 meters.

I am a member of CQ Magazine's DX Hall of Fame and QSL manager for Jon Rudy who has operated from A2/ZS5UZ, C91CO, DU9/N0NM, 3DA0CA and 4W3ZZ.

My profession was Dentistry and I served on the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry for 57 years. I retired completely June 2016.

I am active on all bands, but can most often be found on 160, 60 and 6 meters. My most exciting QSO in 64 years of DX'ing was JT1CO worked in Dec. 2009 on 160 to complete WAZ on top band.
